WHY YOU CAN'T STAY A DAY WITHOUT SOLVING MATHEMATICS

MATHEMATICS IN EVERYDAY LIFE

We live our lives everyday not knowing that we apply the principles of mathematics. Yes,each and everyone of us is a hidden mathematician when it comes to how we go about our daily activities. What we do not know is that from waking up from sleep till going back to sleep at night, we engage our brain in a lot of mental maths and logic. All our activities directly or indirectly points back to the use of maths in our various homes, offices, schools, market places, etc.

OUR DAILY ACTIVITIES AND THE WAYS IN WHICH WE APPLY THE KNOWLEDGE OF MATHEMATICS TO THEM.

1.Waking up: We do wake up at various time frames in the early hours of the morning or later than that. We know that time has to do with figures and figures relates directly to maths. So by the time you wake up late(assuming), you look at your clock and you immediately calculate the number of hours you have spent sleeping without using a calculator. You are like "I've been sleeping for the past 8 hours when I should have been up 2 hours ago". When you calculate time, you automatically solve maths,in that way,you have applied the knowledge of maths.

2.Cooking food: This is mainly the women area. Most mothers do not realise that they do a lot of maths while cooking in the kitchen. E.g
i.Knowing how many cups of rice to boil in what quantity of water.
ii. Knowing how many spoons of salt to add to what cups of rice.
iii. Knowing how many cubes of seasoning (Maggi) or sachets of seasoning powder to addto what quantify of soup or stew being prepared.
iv. Calculating the time required for each kind of food to boil.
So do not think that mothers in the kitchen are illiterates who are unable to solve a little maths,in fact unknown to them, the do a lot of maths on daily basis and this has become a way of life everyday and they cannot do without it.

3. Eating food: This will surprise us but its true. It is common knowledge that the food we eat is measured in the plates with which we eat them. The measurement there is mathematics. We eat food everyday in plates and we end up making statements like "two plates of rice, a cup of garri," For sick people, theirs is measured by the number of spoons they eat which determines the dosage of drugs they take.

4. Taking drugs: All drugs that we take into the body are done based on dosages. These dosages are measurements which regulate the amount of intake. But we do not understand the maths aspect.Taking a closer look at syrups and liquid medicines, we see some clear dosages like "5ml for children under 12 years of age," "10ml for adults between 18 and 30 years" and so on. All these are maths in disguise and before we know what is happening we see ourselves calculating the proper dosage for our ages.

5. On the road: Prior to the publishing of this article, we may not have known that while on the road whether walking or driving, we are calculating a lot in our subconscious mind unknown to us. While driving, we are able to calculate the speed at which other vehicles are operating so as to know when to overtake. As we walk,we are busy calculating our distance from oncoming vehicles to know when to run across and when to walk across the road, the speed and distance of oncoming vehicles etc. Even our little children are not left out as they end up counting the number of cars they have passed and the number that has passed them. Little do they know that they not only do maths but also statistics.

6. Making purchases: At the market, a lot of haggling of prices takes place. We are a always making a lot of additions and subtractions determining what to buy and what not to buy. The traders also calculate their profit and loss (if any) for each commodity sold. From there they determine whether they are progressing or retrogressing. So do not underestimate market women as you will see them calculate your money and give you your balance "change" even when the calculation looks complex.

7. Going to bed: After a hard day's work, we retire to bed after having gone through the day's activities, you calculate the time at which you to go to bed, the number of hours you will spend sleeping which rhymes with the efficiency of your brain and body functions.

With all these in mind, it is obvious that we cannot do without maths as each and everyone of us is a hidden mathematician. Hence, everyday maths, everyday life.
