REVEALED!!! FIVE WAYS OF PURIFYING WATER WITHOUT USING ALUM OR OTHER CHEMICALS
Did you know that banana peels could be used to purify water??
If you are living in Nigeria, then you are opportuned to have this article. Due to human activities on the face of the earth, our water system has been polluted and is in a desolate state. Despite the fact that the earth is 71% water covered not all of this water is fit for drinking. Owing to this, man has provided ways of preserving our remaining water reserve for consumption. Formally we used chemicals and coagulants like Alum, chlorine, bromine, iodine,to purify water but these methods have side effects which can result in death, complex diseases, system disorders and other health risks.
To tackle this problem, we here at kulture360 have researched and discovered five local ways of purifying water from the plants and trees around us,these include;
1.Using fruit peelings e.g apple,tomato
This method was outlaid by a research associate from the National University of Singapore, Ramakrishna Mallampati. His method combined rubbing alcohol with tomato and apple peelings,- by soaking small strips of these fruit peelings on rubbing alcohol and drying them out,he was able to create a no fuss fruit water filter that when placed in dirty groundwater for several hours,it would absorb many toxic substances such as pesticides, heavy metals and commercial dye. Once the apple or tomato peel is removed, the water is safe to drink.
2. Coconuts & Rice - Two step filtration
The fibres from shredded coconut husks are used to filter out most suspended particles, solids like metals and dirts from the water, which then pass through burnt rice husks to remove any remaining debris. Repeating these processes increase water purity till it becomes safe to drink.
3. Banana Peels
Surely you never knew that the banana peel you threw away is a lucrative method of purifying your drinking water clean. Placing your banana peel in water can filter out any pollutants or contaminants in it and safeguard it for drinking.
4. Solar disinfection: Sun & citrus
Using any citrus fruit e.g lemon, lime, orange, grape, tangerine, etc. Add a few slices of any citrus fruit listed above into a clean water container, leave it out in the sun and come back for your pollutants free water.
5. Moringa seed
The moringa seed comes from the moringa tree. The moringa tree is a fast growing drought resistant tree. For more info about the tree, checkout our post on " 3 things you never knew about the moringa tree". The moringa seed is used to purify water in these steps:
i. Collect mature moringa Oleifera seedpods and remove seeds from pods.
ii. Shell seeds( remove seed coats) to obtain clean seed kernels; discard discolored seeds.
iii. Determine quantity of kernels needed based on amount and turbidity of water; in general, 1 seed kernel will treat one litre (1.056qt) of water.
iv. Crush the appropriate number of seed kernels (using grinder, mortar&pestle) to obtain a fine powder and sift the powder through a screen or small mesh.
v. Mix seed powder with a small amount of clean water to form a paste.
vi. Mix the paste and 250ml (1 cup) of clean water into a bottle and shake for one minute to activate the coagulant properties and form a solution.
vii. Filter this solution through a muslin cloth or fine mesh screen (to remove insoluble materials) and into the water to be treated.
viii. Stir treated water rapidly using your spatula for at least 1 minute then slowly (15-20 rotations per minute) for 5-10 minutes.
ix. Let the treated water sit without disturbing for at least 1-2 hours.
x. When the particles and contaminants have settled to the bottom, the clean water can be poured carefully out.
xi. This clean water can then be filtered or sterilized to make it completely safe for drinking.
These methods above are easy and can be used by us to filter our water without necessarily using alum or other chemicals which may have side effects.
